Teradata RainStor enhances analytics with archived data

The rise of big data continues to drive rapid changes in corporate demand. To meet these demands, Teradata CorporaTIon (NYSE: TDC), the world's leading provider of big data analytics and marketing applications, announced the launch of the Teradata RainStor® 7 version of the enterprise data archiving solution. As Teradata's archiving solution for the Hadoop platform, RainStor is committed to meeting the most demanding customer needs such as strict compliance and comprehensive analysis of historical data.

As an online SQL-based enterprise data archiving solution, RainStor significantly reduces archiving space and costs, provides immutable data storage capabilities, and helps customers meet regulatory compliance needs. It can store massively structured and semi-structured data from data warehouses, machines, other relational databases or major data sources, and provides cost-effective data storage with minimal hardware space.

Dan Harrington, executive vice president of global consulting and support services at Teradata, said: "By incorporating Teradata RainStor archiving solutions into Teradata® Unified Data ArchitectureTM, organizations can leverage rich, archived data sources to enable users to use advanced analytics. After the RainStor Archive solution, data previously stored on tape, data in unmanaged data lakes, or deleted data due to lack of storage space will also support advanced analytics."

RainStor's features and capabilities help customers better store and get value from archived data:

Space - Archive compression technology significantly reduces storage space and reduces storage space by 10-40 times depending on the data type.

Secured Data - RainStor provides an immutable data storage model where data can't be changed once it is stored, so RainStor provides tamper-proof audit trails. New or changed data is attached to the file instead of replacing it. In addition, RainStor provides security for access authorization, data lineage tracking, and data encryption.

Running on the Hadoop platform - RainStor offers an enterprise-class online data archiving solution based on the Hadoop platform. It can run natively on the Teradata Hadoop dedicated platform or the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) for commercial Hadoop clusters. In addition to the Hadoop platform, RainStor can also run on non-Hadoop platforms.

Multiple Data Sources - In addition to the Teradata database, RainStor can archive data from Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase IQ, and IBM Netezza. RainStor is able to consolidate data from across the enterprise to the same archive, saving costs and improving analytics performance.

Teradata® Unified Data ArchitectureTM - RainStor's compatible customer analytics ecosystem, deeply integrated with Teradata's Integrated Data Warehouse (IDW) and supporting Teradata® QueryGridTM, which will help customers address new business issues and reduce overall cost and complexity.

Teradata QueryGrid - Users want to perform large-scale data migration by executing query statements in multiple environments to analyze current and historical data without running a multi-step process. Teradata QueryGrid helps users access RainStor data within Teradata query statements.

Teradata RainStor® FastConnectTM - Enables high-speed, bidirectional data migration between Teradata's consolidated data warehouse and RainStor with minimal impact on source systems.

Teradata RainStor® FastForwardTM - Easily migrate data stored on tape to RainStor or to other formats.

"As an innovative data archiving solution, RainStor enables Teradata to further expand its data warehousing and Hadoop product lines. RainStor is designed to help companies fully," said Matt Aslett, research director for data platform and analysis at 451 Research, a technology research and consulting firm. Take advantage of the cost advantages of data compression and deduplication and ensure that archived data can be queried as if it were still stored in the database."

RainStor 7 version flexible solution:

Based on the customer's individual archiving needs, RainStor can be deployed in one of three flexible options.

RainStor System Archiving - The RainStor System Archiving Solution preserves "slowly changing data" or data that is normally out of date in a relational database to a historical archive library such as tape or disk. This enterprise-class archiving solution has data governance, lineage and auditing capabilities. It stores data in the most efficient, scalable, and secure way, while maintaining complete access to source system data.

RainStor Online Archive - The RainStor online archiving solution provides analytics for deep historical databases. It is based on the features of the RainStor system archiving solution, but can improve the accessibility of standard SQL through the RainStor query interface. If RainStor is deployed on the Hadoop platform, it can also improve the accessibility of Hive or Pig.

RainStor Regulatory Data Archiving - The RainStor Regulatory Archive application provides the features of the RainStor online archiving solution with additional compliance features. The solution is suitable for data that is strictly regulated by law, such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), or the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

RainStor is currently available, and the RainStor 7 release will be released in the third quarter of 2015.
