IXYS has partnered with Atmel to develop a reference design package for dimmable and non-dimmable electronic ballasts that combines the advantages of Atmel's MCU and IXYS' extensive range of mixed-signal and power management products.
The dimmable electronic ballast solution (Atmel's model is ATAVRFBKIT and IXYS's model is EVLB001) is available. The non-dimmable solution (Atmel's model is AT89RFD-10 and IXYS's model is EVLB002) will be available in May. This ballast reference design accelerates the design and implementation of customer ballast solutions, both of which demonstrate many design features including: full voltage range input, low harmonic distortion, low standby power and each Kind of protection. The dimmable solution can control the brightness of the lamp with DALI (European Lighting Control Protocol) or "Tactile Control".
The dimmable EVLB001 uses Atmel's single-chip AT90PWM2 AVR for fluorescent lamps and HID (high-pressure gas discharge lamps). The eight-bit microcontroller AT90PWM2 integrates the DALI protocol, allowing the ballast to be connected to a centralized system via the network, greatly improving the flexibility of the lighting system and the controllability of the lighting brightness, thereby reducing maintenance costs and saving energy. The non-dimmable EVBL002 uses the AT83EB5114, a ballast developed in cooperation with a major lighting manufacturer for non-dimmable fluorescent lamps. The microcontroller is a highly integrated, optimized C51 microcontroller with 12-16 bits of enhancement. The PWM generator, amplifier and a 10-bit analog-to-digital conversion greatly improve its functionality.
Both solutions use the reliable IXYS next-generation polar HVTM series MOSFETs, combined with IXYS's mixed-signal power management ICs, including the half-bridge driver, the LCDDIX, a driver with high immunity to interference and high operating voltage. IC; IXI858/IXI859—Regulator/Gate Driver and IXTP02N50D. The IXI858/IXI859 is combined with a depletion MOSFET to achieve the interface and gate drive required for the positive side of the power factor.
The ballast has the following characteristics:
1) MCU control, dimmable brightness.
2) 90-265VAC, 50/60HZ, 90-370VDC.
3) With power factor correction.
4) Overvoltage protection is achieved by power feedback.
5) Variable frequency half bridge structure transformation.
6) 18W, with 2 T8 fluorescent lamps.
7) Automatic, adjustable, single lamp operation.
8) Automatic detection of “Swissâ€, “DALI†or 0-10V brightness adjustment signal 9) MCU control, energy saving in many ways.
