According to foreign media, Samsung is about to acquire German OLED manufacturer Novaled for more than 200 million US dollars. The OLED technology developed by the company is applied to the screens of smartphones and TVs.
The news said that the two sides will reach an agreement within this week as soon as possible. GerdGuenther, the chief marketing officer of Novaled, also said that the negotiations are indeed going on.
In September 2011, Novaled received an undisclosed equity investment from Samsung Ventures Investment Corporation. Novaled later applied for an IPO of $200 million to the United States in 2012, but ultimately did not.
The rumored Samsung's acquisition of this background is a long-standing OLED patent battle between Samsung and LG. As early as 2011, Samsung suspected that 11 employees of the company had leaked OLED technology details to LG Display and filed a lawsuit against the latter. Later, both companies filed an application with the court to issue a lock-up order to the other party's related products. The fighting between the two sides has eased under the mediation of the South Korean government, but in March of this year, LG filed a lawsuit against the court, accusing the latter of illegally using its OLED technology patents and demanding compensation.
If the rumors are true, Samsung will eventually acquire Novaled, and Novaled's OLED patent will be owned by Samsung, which will undoubtedly add more weight to Samsung's OLED patent battle with LG.
