Sharp, Japan, said on August 4 that it will introduce energy-saving devices using light-emitting diode (LED) technology into the lighting equipment market, in order to establish new profit-making pillars in addition to the panel and solar cell business.
Due to rising power generation costs and rising greenhouse gas emissions, LEDs with longer energy savings and longer life are promising as next-generation lighting devices.
Sharp's new LED lighting equipment will be launched in Japan on September 1 and will range in price from 44,100 yen to 199,500 yen ($410-1,856). The time for overseas launch has not yet been decided, and Sharp is not willing to talk about sales or market share targets.
However, the current LED cost is higher than the average fluorescent tube, and Sharp will face fierce competition from Philips and Toshiba.
