According to "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" reported on December 11, LG Display recently announced that it will enter the automotive market in the next-generation lighting field using organic EL. As the first measure, LG Display signed a supply contract with Daimler of Germany, and has increased its lighting production capacity by 30 times, and strives to supply the Japanese-German auto giant. Some analysts believe that the lights will become the core of the organic EL lighting market, and competition including Japanese companies will be fully developed.

The principle of organic EL illumination is to superimpose an organic layer on a plastic substrate and to illuminate the entire surface, which is light and thin and capable of bending. It is said that the order received by LG Display from Daimler is the taillight of organic EL lighting.
If organic EL lighting is used for taillights and headlights, it is easy to realize a stylish design with complicated shapes. In the past, BMW and Audi, which have been designing excellence, purchased organic EL lighting from German lighting giant Osram, which was only used in some sports cars and special cars.
LG Display will use the deal with Daimler as a weapon to promote BMW and Audi in high-end cars. Japanese companies will also be supplied by the Japanese car manufacturer Otaru. We will strive to cultivate it as a business with annual sales of 200 billion won within three years.
On the same day, LG Display revealed that it has launched the "5th generation (1.1 m × 1.25 m)" substrate and the organic EL lighting production line with a monthly capacity of 15,000 in the Gumi area in central South Korea. About 150 billion won was invested. The production line seems to have been transformed from the production line of television, and the production capacity of lighting has increased to 30 times. LG Display Standing Park Sterling emphasized that “the only LG that launches the flexible organic EL lighting production line worldwideâ€.
LG Display has a global share of over 90% in the TV organic EL panel market. Cooperation with LG Electronics, a subsidiary of the same consortium, will accelerate the consolidation of the first throne in the lighting market after TV.
