International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) announced that it has developed a chip prototype that mimics the human brain's operation mode. This experimental “cognitive computer chip” (human brain chip) can eventually create a humanized smart computer that can imitate human brain perception, action and cognitive ability. The huge energy consumption has always been one of the bottlenecks restricting the development of artificial intelligence. The long-term goal of this researcher is to build a chip system with 10 billion neurons and 100 trillion neuron synapses, which will consume only 1 kilowatts of electricity per hour. The "human brain chip" construct mimics the synapses, neurons, and axon structures in the human nervous system and thus has the functions of memory integration (neural synapses), computation (neurons), and communication (axons). IBM has developed two chips, each containing 256 "neurons," one of which has more than 260,000 controllable "synaptic synapses," and the other has more than 60,000 learning-type "neural synapses."

Different from the memory and processor operations in computers today, computers using "human brain chips" will have a combination of internal memory and processor operations. This will not only make the computer faster, but it will also allow them to understand, like the human brain, learning from experience, finding out about things, establishing hypotheses, and remembering results and learning lessons.

IBM said that "human brain chips" can eventually enable computers to understand and adapt instantly. They can be applied to systems that determine the release of tsunami warnings based on global hydrology, temperature, pressure, wave height, and voice information, as well as a combination of visual, auditory and olfactory senses.
