The original version of 802.15.4 ZigBee was approved in 2003 and was upgraded in 2006. Perhaps the most exciting trend in low-power features is the possibility of eliminating the need for a battery, which means no maintenance is required. The first generation of RF4CE remotes will work with a single button battery. Future remote controls may be able to permanently get rid of the battery and obtain all the required transmission energy by collecting energy from ambient light and pressure and movement during use. One contemplated ZigBee "green energy" application is a lighting switch that does not require the use of a battery or is attached to a wire. The energy consumed by simply opening or closing the switch with a finger is sufficient to transmit the control signal to the lamp on the other end of the room with the ZigBee slave.
