Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX9877, the industry's smallest audio subsystem. The device combines a high efficiency, high power, mono Class D speaker amplifier, DirectDrive® stereo headphone amplifier and a low noise bypass analog switch. In addition to integrating these features, the MAX9877 incorporates Maxim's third-generation, ultra-low EMI, Class D amplifier technology to provide Class AB amplifier audio performance with Class D amplifier efficiency. When powered from a 3.7V supply, the device delivers 725mW of output power to an 8Ω load with efficiencies as high as 85% (max). The MAX9877 offers the industry's largest output power from a Li-Ion battery, making it ideal for mobile phones, portable media players (PMPs), and other applications requiring high sound quality, high output power, and high efficiency.Maxim's patent-protected DirectDrive* architecture produces a ground-referenced output from a single supply, eliminating the need for large DC-blocking capacitors. To further save cost and space, the MAX9877 uses Maxim's Active Radiation Suppression** and patented Spread Spectrum Modulation technology to dramatically reduce EMI and eliminate the output filters typically required for Class D amplifiers. In addition, the integrated low noise analog DPST switch allows bypassing of Class D amplifiers to reduce power consumption in portable devices and eliminates the need for external switches. The MAX9877 also features input mixing, volume control, comprehensive click/pop suppression, and a flexible user-defined input architecture (providing 3 preamplifier gain settings). All control is done through the I2C interface.
