ITU develops 3G satellite radio interface specifications
The International Telecommunication Union approved a new standard to ensure global compatibility, international roaming and access to high-speed data services for the third generation mobile communication (3G) IMT-2000 mobile phone system. Recommendation ITU-RM.1850 specifies the satellite radio interface specifications for the IMT-2000 system. Through one or more wireless links, the interface can access a wide range of telecommunications services.
ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré praised governments and industry experts and other ITU members for their timely efforts to develop these new standards. He noted that these achievements will help ITU's efforts to promote broadband access in rural and remote areas of countries around the world.
The update and improvement of the satellite radio interface in Recommendation ITU-RM.1850 is in line with the original intention and goals of IMT-2000, and adapts to the changing requirements of the global market.
While the satellite part of IMT-2000 continues to evolve independently, the development of the IMT-Advanced satellite radio interface has made progress. IMT-Advanced provides a global platform for building next-generation interactive mobile services that can provide faster data access, unified messaging and broadband multimedia.
The satellite part of IMT-Advanced is designed to meet the ever-increasing needs of increasing users in terms of peak bit rate and total throughput, and has greater flexibility in supporting multiple different services simultaneously.
