Liu Muqing: The rapid development of LED technology has gradually entered the general lighting field, including indoor and outdoor. This inevitably has an impact on the energy-saving market. However, this effect is still relatively small. It is believed that with the advancement of LED technology and the further drop in price, LED will gradually occupy the market of traditional lighting products in many application fields.

Liu Muqing: Overall, this is correct. Technically, LED products have great potential for development. Traditional lighting products such as energy-saving lamps have limited development space. Therefore, the traditional lighting companies to enter the LED is the trend.

China Lighting Network: Do you have research on UV LED? Do you think it will become the future opportunity opportunity for the LED industry?

Liu Muqing: As a light source for generating UV light, LED has a certain application field. However, it mainly concentrates on the near-ultraviolet wavelength band and can be used for sterilization, disinfection, and other applications.

China Lighting Network: It is understood that there are not many people who know about LS in China. Can you briefly introduce the general situation of LS?

Liu Muqing: Yes. The full name of the LS series conference is "International Light Sources Technology Symposium", the first of which began in 1975 in Loughborough, United Kingdom. It is basically every three years. In 2007, LS:11 was held in Fudan University in China. After 2010, due to the rapid development of LED technology, it was changed every two years and its name was changed to "International Symposium on the Science and Technology of Lighting". This year is LS:13, held in Troy, USA.

The LS series conference is a science and technology seminar. It is a top-level conference for scientists in this field to discuss lighting science and technology development. Unlike the current domestic forum-style conferences, this conference only involves science and technology issues, does not involve commerce, and does not accept sponsorship of a commercial nature. It is also because of the academic nature that there are not many Chinese counterparts attending this meeting, each time being about 10 to 30 people. Research institutes such as the Electric Light Source Research Institute of Fudan University in China have always participated in this conference, and some corporate counterparts also participated in the conference to learn about the latest developments and trends in this field.

China Lighting Network: What is the topic of this year's LS13? Compared with previous years, what are the newly published research project achievements/information that can be shared with us?

Liu Muqing: The LS13 basically continues the tradition of the conference. However, due to the rapid development of LED technology, there are two changes: the name of the conference and the conference cycle. Because LED flexibility brings about unlimited applications of LED, LED lighting applications (lighting, non-illumination, but Chinese are more lighting) have great development prospects. So do these two changes.

The contents of this session can be seen that LED has been included as the main aspect of the conference, including conference papers and conferences. In addition to HID lamps, traditional lighting sources involve very few. On the LED side, non-visual application reports and papers have occupied a lot of space. At the same time, papers on scientific issues including lighting have also increased dramatically.

Liu Muqing: The LS Conference is an international conference on the light source and lighting. Most of the world’s leading scientists and industry’s top technology personnel have attended the conference. As academic conferences, the issues discussed can be seen in the future direction of the industry. This is a major difference from many current forum-style meetings. It is believed that the meeting is very useful for Chinese counterparts to understand the future development trend of the industry.

Prof. Liu Muqing and Ph.D. served as director of the Institute of Electric Light Sources at Fudan University and head of the Department of Light Sources and Lighting Engineering. He served as a part-time manager of the International Electric Light Source Committee, the Secretary General of the 11th International Committee on the International Conference on Electric Sources, and the National 863 Major.
