Wireless communication dynamics: Broadcom opens the era of in-vehicle Ethernet

Communication technology expert Broadcom recently released its Ethernet series products for in-vehicle networks and announced its entry into the automotive market. Since then, in addition to the communications infrastructure, handheld devices, and broadband communications markets, automobiles have become Broadcom ’s next target market.

The development trend and challenge of vehicle network

With the increasing and popularization of electronic products and components in automobiles, the complexity of in-vehicle systems is also increasing. The data exchange between systems such as cameras, diagnostics, automatic parking, and infotainment tends to be pure digital transmission, and the dashboard display The control system has also evolved towards processor control. Increasing data transmission and exchange pose challenges to the bandwidth of the in-vehicle network.

At the same time, in-vehicle networks need compatibility and developed architecture to support. Must be scalable and support multiple systems and devices. Need to have a convergent capability and an open architecture. In terms of cables, automakers are seeking lower wiring costs. In terms of industry standards, in-vehicle networks must meet strict regulatory requirements, and must have good reliability, temperature, and low power requirements.

Broadcom BroadR-Reach technology solves the challenge

In order to meet the above-mentioned automotive market demand for in-vehicle networks, Broadcom has developed patented technology BroadR-Reach based on standard Ethernet technology, which is adopted in the entire series of in-vehicle Ethernet products released this time. It can achieve high-performance 100Mbps Ethernet interconnection, using a single pair of unshielded twisted pair for transmission. The upper MAC end uses a standard Ethernet interface, and the PHY layer is innovatively optimized for in-vehicle applications. In addition to using a single unshielded twisted pair transmission, the speed of the standard Ethernet is reduced to about 50Mbps, which can meet automotive Application requirements for EMC.

The traditional vehicle network transmission generally uses Cable, and its connectors are complex and need to be shielded, while Broadcom BroadR-Reach technology uses a single twisted pair, the connector is simple, the cost is 80% lower than the traditional cable, and the weight is 30% lighter, thereby effectively improving the car Fuel efficiency.

The Broadcom automotive Ethernet product family consists of five devices, including three highly integrated switching chips with embedded PHY and two independent PHY solutions. Each device in this automotive solution series is designed to meet in-vehicle EMC and extreme automotive temperature environments. Broadcom meets the requirements of TS16949 and is currently undergoing AEC-Q100 certification to obtain AEC-Q100 qualification.

The specific application cases of BroadR-Reach are ADAS-advanced driver assistance system, which can realize object detection, check the surrounding situation when parking, lane departure warning and high beam control. In addition, there are infotainment systems and vehicle diagnostic systems.

Mr. Timothy Lau, senior product line manager of automotive network products for Broadcom ’s Infrastructure and Networking Group, pointed out that Ethernet is characterized by low cost and high bandwidth. It is very suitable for in-vehicle entertainment and video system applications in the automotive market and can replace those that require high bandwidth. Applications. Automotive networks currently have several network standards such as LIN, CAN, Flexray, etc. These networks are independent and not connected. Car manufacturers hope to unify the in-vehicle network, while Ethernet hopes to integrate multiple in-vehicle networks into one, and achieve complete interconnection.
