Wolfson Microelectronics Co., Ltd. has released two new high-definition audio devices WM8861 and WM8862 for personal computers and notebook computers. These two new devices provide up to 5 times better audio quality than existing solutions on the market. They have a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a signal-to-noise ratio of 105dB and a true 2Vrms capacitorless output capability. When combined with the advanced power management features of Wolfson ’s Clarity Audio Studio PC software, the WM8861 and WM8862 can also significantly extend the battery life of a typical notebook computer by up to 30 minutes.
Both devices have built-in stereo speaker drivers, each channel can provide 2W output to a 4Ω load, and has the highest efficiency that can be achieved on personal computer audio equipment.
The WM8861 and WM8862 require fewer external components to achieve this high level of audio quality, which can reduce the number of external components on average, thereby reducing PCB board space requirements by 45%. In addition, this reduces the audio PCB material cost of a common laptop computer by 56%.
Wolfson ’s SilentSwitch ™ technology ensures that no pops or ticks are produced at the output at any time. While ensuring maximum audio performance, it can quickly and quietly shut down unused paths. The two devices also feature speaker frequency response enhancements and dynamic range controllers implemented in hardware. They can provide a louder sound from small speakers without the burden of audio signal processing tasks for the main processor. This brings high-fidelity quality audio to laptops and significantly enhances the end-user experience-a perfect choice for music lovers, musicians, announcers, producers, etc.
There are many different types of headphones that consumers can choose from, and the way they connect to the outlet varies. WM8861 and WM8862 include an advanced headphone detection function. When a headphone is connected, it will actively detect the type of connection used and convert the input connection into a property that matches the headphone. This ensures full compatibility with the earbuds and headset connectors that are always diverse on the market today.
WM8861 has a newly added main I2S audio and I2C / SPI control interface, which can ensure the control of downstream audio devices, such as various high-fidelity DAC, digital input amplifier or Wolfson WM0010 digital signal processor (DSP) and other audio DSP . This ensures that audio signal processing is offloaded, achieving lower power consumption and longer battery life.
