The air cushion device consists of three layers of rubber: a seat-type rubber layer is sandwiched between two electrically conductive rubber layers (electrodes). When the distance between the upper and lower electrodes (rubber layer) changes due to the driver's activity, the capacitance between the electrodes also changes. The pressure applied to the air cushion device can be measured based on the total amount of change in capacitance. Sumitomo Riko said that it takes a few seconds to calculate the breathing rate and heart rate based on stress. The company's future development goal is to further shorten the calculation time.
The electrode (rubber layer) developed by Sumitomo Riko is extremely flexible and can be realized by printing "SR" (smart rubber) flexible conductive rubber material on a base material made of rubber.
