Recently, foreign media reported that the warranty period for some of Seagate’s hard drives has shrunk dramatically from the original five years to just two years, only to reduce costs. Today this site received a statement from Seagate officials clarifying this issue.
According to sources, Seagate's Barracuda/Barracuda LP series desktop hard drives and Momentus Green notebook hard drives will only enjoy a two-year warranty period, while the high-performance XT series and enterprise-class products will not be affected.
Seagate officials stated that since July 2, 2011, Barracuda, Barracuda Green series hard drives and standard models of Momentus 7200/5400 rpm hard drive products have undergone channel distribution warranty adjustments, from the previous three years to two years, but all are 100% completely new. Products shipped from the effective date adopt this new warranty policy, and existing channel stocks shipped before the effective date continue to enjoy 3-year warranty service.
At the same time, Seagate will still provide five-year warranty service for Barracuda XT, Momentus XT series hard drives and enterprise hard drives.
Seagate also stressed that the changes to the terms of this warranty will have little impact on consumers, as most of the product repairs will take place within the first two years, and Seagate hard drives and other retail products based on Seagate hard drives will still be included in the purchase. Independent manufacturers provide warranty service.
