Subsidy effective? President Acer says Ultrabook prices will dive

According to Taiwan’s “Electronic Times” report, Acer’s president, Weng Jianren, said that the company’s Ultrabook product is expected to fall from US$1,000 to US$799-899 in the second quarter of 2012, with a margin of approximately 10%-20%. As more manufacturers begin mass shipments of similar products in 2012, Ultrabook prices will drop to $499 in 2013. Perhaps Intel's subsidies are really effective.

Acer currently ships about 100,000 Ultrabooks per month, and it is expected that it will reach the goal of 250,000 units - 300,000 units by the end of 2011.

With regard to the shortage of hard drives caused by flooding in Thailand, Weng Jianren expects Acer’s product supply gap in the fourth quarter to be about 10-15%, which is far below the 30-35% of hard disk manufacturers themselves, which is also lower than analysts’ expectations.

Due to Acer’s strategy in recent years to shift shipments and market share to focus on product quality and consumer demand, although the company has now slipped from second to fourth in the rankings of notebook manufacturers, Weng Jianren is still in 2012 globally.
