Infineon and NXP jointly solve the security problem of electronic identity documents

On July 7, 2015, Munich, Germany – non-contact, versatile, fast and safe, is an important requirement for a new generation of travel documents. The main challenge is to balance security and convenience: travelers want to pass border security more quickly and safely, and also want to use their smartphones to use online services provided by government agencies when they travel. For the past three years, the NewP@ss research project has been working to address the security of electronic identity documents. Security chip provider Infineon Technologies AG (FSE code: IFX / OTCQX code: IFNNY) teamed up with NXP Semiconductors Germany (NXP) and security chip card system specialist G&D to conduct the research . The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) contributes about 4 million euros. The 15 European companies and research institutes under the EUREKA program CATRINE form a consortium, and these companies are members of this consortium.

Infineon and NXP jointly solve the security problem of electronic identity documents

The consortium has developed a data structure and a new security chip architecture and is in the process of incorporating it into the latest international standards for travel documents. In addition to the ID holder's biometric data, the latest electronic travel documents can also record visa data as well as entry and departure stamps in electronic form. In this way, the issuing authority can update the electronic passport and similar documents for a relatively long period of time without having to replace them, for example, if the name is changed after marriage or the address is changed after moving.

Given the increasing demand for travel and the availability of electronic services anytime, anywhere, the consortium has also studied the use of smart phones and tablets to securely use digital ID cards. Experts considered open architecture and experimented with new security mechanisms at the software and hardware levels. Highlights include contactless communication with electronic ID cards, secure mobile user authentication, and the input and output of confidential data in a protected computing environment.

The total budget of the NewP@ss research project is around €30 million, half of which is borne by commercial and industrial partners and the other half by five EU member governments. The German capital contribution is as high as 8.7 million euros.

At present, all 28 member states of the European Union have issued biometric travel documents covering approximately 500 million inhabitants. Electronic identity cards are used in 23 countries in Europe. Other European countries have announced that they will launch an electronic ID card in the next few years, or start issuing a new generation of electronic ID cards that the NewP@ss research project will help develop. Since 2006, a total of 120 countries have issued approximately 500 million electronic travel documents.
